Not sure what size quilt to get? You're not alone - quilt sizing can be surprisingly confusing! Whether you're shopping for a new bed quilt, a cozy couch throw, or a special gift, here's a quick guide to help you find the right fit.
- Range in size from 30" x 40" to 48" x 60"
- Best for cribs, car seats, tummy time, nap mats
Baby quilts are a sweet and practical gift that often becomes a keepsake. They're small enough to be easily washed (a must for parents!) and versatile enough to use around the house or on the go.
And when the baby outgrows the crib? That quilt can grow with them. Many little ones end up using their baby quilt for:
- Fort-building adventures
- A comforting "lovey" or favorite nap companion
- A baby doll blanket or stroller accessory
- Story time snuggles well into early childhood
Tip: A handmade baby quilt is one of the few gifts that doesn’t just get used — it becomes part of the memories that make childhood feel like home.
Throw Quilts (a.k.a. Lap Quilts)
- Ranges in size around 50" x 60", give or take 10" on either side
- Best for couch snuggles, reading chairs, office nooks, and outdoor adventures
These are your go-to cozy quilts - perfect for movie nights, thoughtful gifts, or a pop of color draped over a chair. Throw quilts are one of the most versatile sizes and tend to be best sellers for a reason.
But their usefulness doesn't stop at the couch. Throw quilts are also great for:
- Backyard lounging
- Picnics in the park
- Cozying up by a campfire
- Watching fireworks or stargazing on a cool evening
Tip: If you're shopping for a gift and unsure of the recipient's bed size, a throw quilt is a safe, well-loved choice - indoors and out.
- Starts at 68" x 72" and can increase from there
- Best for twin beds, daybeds, reading nooks, and oversized throws
Twin quilts are ideal for kids' rooms, guest beds, or adults who want a little extra room to wrap up. They’re a great middle-ground between a throw and a full bed quilt — roomy, cozy, and easy to layer.
These quilts also work beautifully for:
- Camp or bunk beds
- Daybeds and trundle setups
- Layering at the foot of a queen bed for extra warmth or style
-
Taller adults who want a larger couch quilt
📏 Tip: Want a quilt that hangs nicely over the edges of the bed? Be sure to check your mattress depth and add 6–10 inches on each side.
- Queen is typically 90" x 100", mostly around 90" square
- King is typically 110" x 108", but mostly 108" square
- Best for master bedrooms, guest rooms, heirloom gifts, and year-round comfort
Queen and king quilts are full-coverage bed quilts made for both beauty and practicality. These larger quilts can anchor your bedroom style while providing lasting warmth through every season.
They're also ideal for:
- Layering over lighter blankets in winter
- Giving as wedding or anniversary gifts
- Creating a cozy statement on larger beds or minimalist bedrooms
- Folding at the foot of the bed for easy grab-and-go warmth
Sizing Tip: A standard queen mattress is 60” x 80”, while a king is 76” x 84”. Many of my queen-sized quilts (often around 90” square) will also fit a king-size bed — just with a little less overhang on the sides and foot. If you love a more tailored or minimal drape, a generously sized queen may be all you need.
