The Story Behind My Baby Quilts Collection

The Story Behind My Baby Quilts Collection

Baby quilts weren’t originally part of my long-term plan—but they found their way into my work for a few good reasons.

At live events, they’re often the first to sell—offering a more affordable entry point into the world of handmade quilts. When I asked customers what they wanted to see more of, baby quilts came up. And from a practical standpoint, they allowed me to use existing materials efficiently, especially when prepping for markets.

I’ll be honest—baby quilts aren’t my favorite thing to make. But I still choose to make them with care and intention, because they offer something meaningful, giftable, and accessible.

And every now and then, I come across a fabric collection that changes everything—something so charming or nostalgic I can’t not turn it into baby quilts. (Let’s just say… keep an eye out later this year for a few beloved storybook characters making their way into my shop.)

Why I Make Baby Quilts (Even If They're Not My Favorite)

While baby quilts weren’t where I started—or what I love making most—they’ve become an intentional part of what I offer. Here’s why:

  • Lower Price Point: Not everyone is ready to invest in a full-size heirloom quilt, but a baby quilt offers a more approachable way to experience the quality and feel of handmade. It’s an introduction to what I do—at a size and price that makes sense for many.

  • Customer Input: When I asked what people wanted, baby quilts came up. They weren’t the loudest response, but they were clear and doable—especially with fabrics already in my stash. I listened, and added them to my lineup.

  • Event Strategy: At live events, having something smaller and more affordable helps draw people in. Sometimes it’s the baby quilts that start the conversation—and that connection can grow into a future custom order or larger purchase down the road.

I may not love making baby quilts the way I do designing full bed quilts, but I respect what they offer: accessibility, flexibility, and the chance to create something that becomes part of someone’s earliest memories.

When Fabric Inspires the Collection

While some baby quilts come from strategy, others come from inspiration.

Every now and then, I come across a fabric line that practically begs to be made into baby quilts. Whether it’s a soft floral, a charming woodland theme, or something that feels like it came straight out of a storybook, I can see the quilt in my mind before I’ve even finished unrolling the bolt.

These moments aren’t planned—they’re led by creative joy. I might not be building a baby quilt collection at the time, but if the right fabric crosses my path, I let myself say yes.

(And if you love classic children’s stories… let’s just say you might want to keep an eye out later this year.)

Wrapping Up

I may not make baby quilts all the time, but when I do, they’re stitched with the same care and quality I bring to every piece I create. Whether you’re shopping for a new arrival, looking for a meaningful gift, or simply love the smaller scale, these quilts are meant to be used, loved, and remembered.
